In this guided school program, students will learn about the history and cultural life of Vancouver’s Chinatown through our interactive exhibits and touchable teaching collection. Delving into the lived experiences and mementos of Chinatown’s diverse residents, students will gain an appreciation for the community’s resilient spirit and rich cultural heritage.

Total length: 1 hour

Grade levels: adaptable to all grade levels

Cost per student: $8 (1 adult chaperone per 5 students may visit for free)

Explore the historic houses and engage in story time and eye-spy activities to learn about Steveston's unique cultural community. Students will participate in a shopping relay game while representing a family that may have lived in this community. Experience what life may have been like for the workers, families and children from diverse cultures who lived and worked here together.

Discover the interwoven worlds of math and art. Using tessellations as a foundation, each workshop explores pattern making and mathematical elements of design. Workshops examine the artwork of Coast Salish contemporary artist Dylan Thomas, and how he has connected math and geometry to his art practice.

Curriculum tie-ins: Art Education, Indigenous Art, Earth Science, Math, STEAM

The way people in North Vancouver get around has changed over time. Students will hop aboard Streetcar 153 and explore local history, community, and change through stories and play. 

Program Highlights: 

• A guided gallery scavenger hunt 

• Socio-emotional learning with Kimochi puppets and The Story of Streetcar 153 

• Students board a real streetcar that once ran up Lonsdale Ave! 

Invite OWL (Orphaned Wildlife) Rehabilitation Society to join you in your classroom to learn about the amazing species of raptors that call BC home, the features and adaptations that make them unique, their life cycles, and about the dangers they face and how you can help. You also get the chance to meet some of OWL’s Raptor Ambassadors up close in person! Each program will be focused to each grade level that is participating.

Talking Trees – Student Program (K to Grade 12)

Welcome to our TALKING TREES - School Program | Presented by Talaysay Tours

Type of Program:  Student Indigenous Walking Tour - Ecology

Tour Description:  This is a walking tour in Stanley Park. Your Talaysay Cultural Land Ambassador(s) / Guide(s) will take you on a forest walk and teach the rich stories and history of the land while you learn how the trees and plants are used by indigenous people for both food and medicine.  Learn to identify a variety of indigenous plants and tree species  so when you venture into the forest you too will know what is edible, medicinal and adaptable for technology.   Emphasis on Indigenous Ways of Knowing, Sustainable Practices and Ecology. 

Date of Tour:  Monday to Friday

Start Time:  10:00 am   End Time:  11:30 am    Duration:  1.5 hrs  We can book custom times between 9:00 am and 10:30 am for the morning tour and 12:00 pm and 1:30 pm for the Afternoon Tour.

Includes:  Guide-Ambassador-Instructor.  At times we have a co-guide, a trainer and or a trainee. The tour is rich with Indigenous stories and interpretation.  Students have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions during the tour and or in the last 15 minutes of the tour.  

Student Rate with 20 or more participants:  $32.00 / participant + GST & Fees (This Rate is for K to 12 Students Only). 

With 20+ students, 1 teachers or adult volunteers is complimentary.  When there are less than 20 students, the base rate is $640 + GST & Fees.

Primary Location:  Stanley Park:

This tour meets at the Stanley Park bus loop which is accessible by car, taxi, bus or by foot. Our guide will meet you under the gazebo in the bus loop. Please note, if driving by car, the parking lot is all pay parking. If taking the public bus, it is the #19 bus to Stanley Park and it is the last stop.  
If traveling by school bus, the driver can drop the students off then park at the designated bus parking in Stanley Park.  

Please provide yourself plenty of time to arrive and find your guide.

Custom Locations: 
When planned in advance, our Cultural Land Ambassadors could travel to a forest area near your school.  Review of the site for safety, access and diversity in Indigenous plants is required. There is an additional $115.00 + GST & Fees cost for travel related fees for us to come to a custom location.

Come and join us celebrate the arts with your class! We offer a selection of virtual shows for your preK- Grade 8 students: dance, music, puppetry, story tellings from around the world. 2021 will be the 44th edition of the Festival. We will be virtual this year and give you lots of option to watch the show(s) from the comfort of your classroom for an extended period of time. To simplify your booking this year, we are selling Class Pass(es) at an affordable rate of $60 per class/per show and will allow unlimited streaming from the time the performance is first shown during the week of the Festival (May 31- June 6, 2021) until June 13, 2021.
