Grade 3 to 7 Exploring the Sanctuary

George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Programs for this age group are 1.5 hours long and include a short orientation session in our Lecture Hall with its museum collections, followed by a 1 hr biologist-led walk, during which students will learn the basics of bird identification and the importance of the Sanctuary's biodiversity to migratory birds and other wildlife. The Sanctuary is located in the Fraser River estuary, and trails meader between large treed areas, open ponds and natural tidal mudflats and wetlands. Seasonal highlights in the fall include the arrival of the Lesser Snow Geese from Russia. Winter highlights often include owls and the very friendly Black-capped Chickadees. In spring, the emphasis is on spring migrants and nesting behavior.

Museum of Surrey

Explore the life of early Surrey residents and compare it to our lives today. Students move through a virtual museum as they learn about pioneer homes like the Anderson Cabin, natural resources in the Surrey Stories gallery, and how raw wool becomes clothing in the Textile Studio. Students will discover how diverse the community of Surrey is.

Guided Heritage Tours (Gr 7 -12)

Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site

Discover the stories of a diverse fishing, canning, and boat building community at the scenic Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site on the shores of the Fraser River. This one-hour guided tour is led by a Heritage Interpreter, and includes introductions to the heritage buildings which illustrated the living and working conditions of the communities that made Steveston the special place it is today.

Hands-on History

Academie Duello

Get a hands-on tour of our medieval and renaissance museum of arms and armour, original
renaissance books, and heraldry!

Your students will get excited about the middle ages and renaissance in a new way by
handling reproduction and historical swords, trying on real steel and leather armour, leafing
through parchment and linen books, and learning all about the surrounding history from our
expert instructors.

We combine engaging lectures and demonstrations with opportunities for students to hold
and experience artifacts while learning their stories and real world use.

Hazards in My Home (grades 1 - 2)

Langley Environmental Partners Society

Students become Hazard Detectives and identify which household hazardous products can be harmful by matching symbols with meanings. They also learn how household hazardous products can be harmful outside the home and learn safer choices for us and the environment. Students participate in making a Greener Cleaner for their classroom.

LEPS workshops take place in YOUR CLASSROOM in LANGLEY, ABBOTSFORD or SURREY school districts.

Heritage Christmas Edukit

Historic Stewart Farm

Students explore a Victorian holiday experience from their classroom. By creating vintage wooden crafts, exploring the Stewart’s late 1800s holiday traditions, other newcomer who lived on the farm, and learning about the diverse holiday celebrations of our community students will tie traditions of the past to our community today. Two-week rental.

Mackin Heritage House

These outdoor tours get you moving and enjoying the Maillardville community at large. With our Heritage Garden tour you can visit our garden learning about the plants and history of gardens in general followed by a herb satchel activity. During our Maillardville Community Walk learn the history of Maillardville & Fraser Mills as you walk along Brunette Avenue to Laval Square. (Some uphill walking required)
